What to Wear for Your Maternity Photo Shoot

A styling guide by an Emmy-nominated wardrobe stylist & Los Angeles photographer

Maternity photos are about honoring a moment that is both powerful and fleeting. Your body is doing something incredible—and what you wear should support that, not compete with it.

Whether we’re shooting at the beach, in your home, or in a studio, the styling approach remains the same: intentional, effortless, and deeply connected to you.

This is my go-to philosophy when styling maternity sessions for my clients.

Let the Body Be the Focus

The most important thing we’re highlighting is your shape.

Skip anything overly complicated or distracting. Instead, lean into pieces that:

  • Gently hug the body
  • Create clean, flattering lines
  • Allow your bump to be fully seen

Form-fitting dresses, soft knits, or even a simple two-piece set can be incredibly powerful when styled with intention.

If we’re keeping colors simple, texture becomes the star.

    I absolutely love:

    • Woven fabrics
    • Crochet pieces
    • Soft knits
    • Gauze cotton
    • Semi-sheer layers

These textures catch light beautifully and add depth without overwhelming the frame.

A slightly sheer dress or knit allows the body to subtly show through, which creates that dreamy, editorial softness we’re always chasing.

    Movement Over Structure

Even outside of a beach setting, movement matters.

    Think:

    • Flowy dresses
    • Open layers
    • Oversized shirts
    • Lightweight fabrics that respond to motion

We can create movement with a simple turn, a walk, or even a subtle shift in posture. The right fabric brings those moments to life.

Color Palette: Elevated Neutrals with a Soft Pop

I always lean toward a refined, neutral palette.

    Core tones:

    • Ivory
    • Cream
    • Sand
    • Taupe
    • Soft black

If you’d like a bit of variation, we can incorporate a subtle, muted tone:

    • Sage
    • Dusty rose
    • Terracotta
    • Soft blue

Keeping colors cohesive ensures your images feel elevated and timeless—something you’ll love just as much years from now.

The best maternity photos aren’t about perfect outfits—they’re about how you feel in them.

When you feel comfortable, confident, and connected to your body, it shows in every frame.

    Keep it simple.
    Lean into texture.
Let the wind do its thing.

And trust that less is always more.
